The World We Live In

I've been thinking a lot about the world we live in and how it is so fast-paced. I don't know about you, but I have a hard time keeping up with it.

I think some of it has to do with technology. Don't get me wrong, I love my gadgets as much as the next guy. In fact, everyone in my family has their favorite gadget, Mrs. Riley and me with our iPhones and our girls with their DSs. They're amazing, and they allow us to connect with our family at home, pursue interests online, and create family memories with photo albums and movies.

Having said that, I can't help but think that technology has some downers. It seems to fragment my thinking when I try to process and respond to the overwhelming numbers of emails. During dinner our phones ping with incoming texts. I also find myself behind the computer screen a lot more than I used to. (Of course the irony is that I'm behind the computer screen to write this post!)

Anyway check this video out from youtube on the world we live in. Pretty fascinating. What do you think?

  2. Yeah, I think you are right, we all have our favorite technology device that we use a lot. Some of the time they are useful and others they are a nuisance. For example, I have a phone but I always have to remember to keep it on, plus I only use it about three times a week to call my parents after school. The video was very interesting as well, I didn't know half those things about technology!

    1. Your comment about phones being one of the "go to" devices makes me wonder at what point should students have their own phone. What do you think?

  3. I totally agree with your thoughts. The world of technology can be very bad or very good. There are always ups and downs. It's very important to know this. Many kids and adults take technology as a very good thing. So people even think technology is going to take over the world very soon. But I don't really think this.

  5. I agree with you because most of the book stores in Singapore has closed. It is all because of technology. Now that you can get book on i-pads and Kendals. Books will soon be gone.

    1. Great point, Maggie. Bookstores are hurting these days with more and more readers going to ebooks. Have you tried reading an ebook? If so, how do you like it compared to a regular book? I've read a few on my iPad and I can see some advantages and disadvantages, but I'm wondering what students your age think.

  6. I agree with you about how technology can take lots of time and can also be boring (like emails). But it can also be fun because you can play games. That video really had some interesting information on it. I can't believe that the average american teenager sends 2,272 text messages per month.

  8. Dear Mr. Riley,
I agree with you about how time goes way too fast beucase its like one second your looking down at a screen and another you're rushing to get your jobs done. And about how everyone, well maybe not everyone, has their favorite piece of technology. The video is amazing beucase I never knew all of that information about technology in that kind of way.

  9. I agree with what your saying because, the world of technology has changed so much in the last year and months. I agree it is hard to keep up with it. The video was very interesting, it gave a lot of facts that I found very interesting

  10. I thought the video was very interesting, who ever would have told me those fact? One thing for sure, not the people selling the products. I have to admit myself, I spend more time playing on the computer instead of doing homework!

  11. Dear Mr. Riley,
I agree with you because the world we live in is really fast. Everybody walks around with their phones and it distracts us from our families. These days, when you start watching something, you get so glued to it that you don't even notice the time passing. The video shows a lot of facts about the world today.

  12. You show the bright side of Technology and the downside. You give two sides to the story and I like how you put the video to support your ideas. :)

  14. Dear Mr Riley,
I agree with what your saying because I think the world we live in, has changed even since last year. everyday I see the second person on the street either carrying an iPhone or a iPod. I guess its a good thing since you can check your important emails on the-go, but it can also break apart some family relationships because people would rather be distracted by gadgets rather than talking with their family. This makes me think a lot about growing technology and I think this is a great topic to think about (the video was also good supporting evidence).
